The East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind the public that there are many internet schemes being used to defraud the public and businesses. Feb. 9, 2021 is Safer Internet Day.

"During these times, more people (for school and work) have to use the internet for meetings, presentations and learning. Scammers know this and are busy trying to take advantage of people on-line more now. We have to remain vigilant and not let our guard down," states Inspector Tyler Sturgeon, Commander for the East Algoma OPP Detachment.

Do not divulge any personal information related to credit cards or banking particulars over the phone, by email, letter, fax, or any other means of communication. Call your credit card company or financial institution on your terms to verify/report any suspicious activity.

Never send money or gift cards (Google Play, iTunes, Vanilla, etc.) to anyone you don't know or trust. If you're not sure what to do, ask someone you know. And, NEVER divulge your Social Insurance Number (SIN) to someone over the phone or by email.

If you believe that someone is posing as a fraudster on the phone, hang up. If they've gained access to your computer, power off by unplugging it. Also, you can file a complaint through the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. If you are a victim of a fraud or scam, contact your local police agency.
