LSSU, Sault High to assist college-bound students with the FAFSA during College Goal Sunday, February 14

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI - What could be sweeter than getting candy for Valentine’s Day?

How about getting help filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)?

Lake Superior State University and Sault Area High School will team up again to present College Goal Sunday, a free workshop from 2-4 p.m. on February 14 at the high school to help college-bound students and their parents fill out the FAFSA, which is a requirement for any student seeking federal college financial aid.

During this year's event, which is one of nearly 40 scheduled statewide, LSSU and Sault High staff will discuss financial aid, provide guidance on filling out the FAFSA, and will have computers on hand for students and parents to fill it out and submit it online.

College Goal Sunday is a collaborative effort led by the Michigan Department of Education, and the Michigan Student Financial Aid Association to increase the number of students who continue education beyond high school and earn post-secondary degrees.

The FAFSA is required of any student seeking federal financial aid including grants, loans, and many scholarships.

Last year, thousands of students received assistance at College Goal Sunday events.

“Students must complete and file a FAFSA in order to secure federal financial aid and should file by the March 1 priority date to ensure eligibility for federal and state programs,” said Deb Faust, director of LSSU Financial Aid.

Students under 23 years of age are encouraged to attend with a parent or guardian.

Parents and students should bring their completed 2015 Federal tax return (1040) if possible, or their W-2 and 1099 forms.

Faust said if parents and students cannot attend College Goal Sunday, they may still get help filling out the FAFSA at LSSU during FAFSA Fridays through the rest of February.

There will be one-on-one help during all of these sessions that are held from 2-5 p.m. on Fridays in the LSSU Fletcher Center for Student Services.

Students need not be planning to attend LSSU to participate in College Goal Sunday at Sault Area High School on February 14 or FAFSA Fridays in February at LSSU.
