SAULT STE. MARIE, MI – The Sault Area Career & Technical Education Center is teaming up with Lake Superior State University and Hospice of the Eastern Upper Peninsula (EUP) to revise an existing scholarship earmarked for LSSU nursing and health care students.

Eligible LSSU-bound Sault CTE grads will be able to apply for an existing Hospice scholarship award that helps cover LSSU tuition and expenses.

"The Sault Area Career Center is honored to partner with Hospice of the EUP and LSSU to expand the opportunities for our students,” said Jo Anne Lussier, director of the Sault Area Career Center. “The annual scholarship is an excellent chance for our students interested in a career in the field of health sciences to further their education at LSSU, while giving back to our community. We are fortunate to be able to work with both Hospice of the EUP and the Lake Superior State University Foundation.”

Hospice of the EUP is a non-profit organization formed in 1983.

The first Medicare certified program in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and one of only two hospice programs in the state that offers services free of charge, Hospice of the EUP provides patient care programs and hospice care for the terminally ill, as well as care for the chronically ill, through its Robert and Helen Ball Hospice House in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and throughout the community.

Other services provide hospice volunteers, coordination of bereavement services, spiritual counseling, medical supplies, and hospice education and literature.

Eligible candidates for Hospice of the EUP scholarship must be incoming freshmen enrolled in any pre-nursing or health-care program offered at LSSU, and a graduate of an Eastern Upper Peninsula high school who has successfully completed the Health Sciences program at the Sault Area Career Center with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Applicants can apply during their high school senior year and must submit an essay to the Sault Area Career Center indicating their commitment to the hospice philosophy in their practice and the health-care area in which they would like to focus.

They must also commit to 40 hours of volunteer service with Hospice of the EUP.

This year’s deadline to apply is March 27. Applications may be dropped off at the Sault Area High School CTE office.

The scholarship will be awarded on May 18 during the CTE Awards Night at the Sault Area High School.
