Location secured for new joint-use Blind River school

As part of Ontario's ongoing investments to build and improve local schools, the province has given Algoma District School Board approval to acquire 39 acres of land for a new joint-use school with Conseil scolaire public du Grand Nord de l’Ontario in Blind River.

“From modernizing our curriculum to revitalizing our classrooms and their facilities, we are investing in our students and giving them every tool to achieve their full potential,” said Education Minister Stephen Lecce. “Construction of the new joint Blind River site further demonstrates our government’s historic investment in Ontario’s schools and our overall commitment to supporting our students and families.”

The $480,000 investment will be used to support the construction of a new, quality joint-use school facility for the students of Blind River. This facility will include a JK-12 English-language public school, a JK-8 French-language public elementary school, and a four-room child care centre. This is part of the province’s capital investment program to support students with modern learning spaces. 

“Our government is proud to support French-language education in Ontario,” said Sam Oosterhoff, parliamentary assistant to Ontario’s Minister of Education. “The new joint-use school in Blind River will make a big difference for Francophone families in the area and prepare French-speaking children for lifelong success.”

Ontario’s investment in new and updated schools will create the foundation for a modern learning environment for hundreds of students across the province.

Highlights of the new school construction will include:
    •    453 JK-12 student spaces in Blind River for the Algoma District School Board and Conseil scolaire public du Grand Nord de l'Ontario
    •    64 new licensed child care spaces
    •    four new child care rooms

The joint Blind River Public School will be located at 180 Youngfox Road, Blind River.

Quick facts:
    •    The Ontario Government is working with school board partners to invest in capital projects that advance safe and accessible learning opportunities for students.
    •    The Ontario Government announced in Budget 2019 that over the next 10 years, Ontario is investing over $12 billion in capital grants, including allocating $550M in 2020-21 for new schools, additions and major renovations.
    •    This massive investment will build new schools and help existing schools after a decade of closures and maintenance backlog.
    •    Ontario is also providing school boards with a historic $1.4 billion in funding to renew and maintain existing schools.
    •    This funding could be used to replace aging heating or air conditioning systems, repair roofs and windows, and install important accessibility features like elevators and ramps.
