EQAO Results Improve in Eight of Nine Categories
 
Sault Ste. Marie:  The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) is pleased to announce that results for Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) testing scores improved in eight of the nine categories for the 2013-14 school year.
 
Results from the Grade 9 mathematics testing showed a one per-cent increase in the Applied program and a two percent increase in the Academic program. 
 
The Grade 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) saw a five percent improvement over the previous year’s result. 
 
In primary testing reading scores were up two percent and writing one percent while mathematics results saw a two percent drop.  
 
In junior testing, reading results improved eleven percent, writing was up nine percent and mathematics was up four percent.
 
“These results are very promising as it indicates that the programs we have put in place at all grade levels are resulting in positive outcomes for our students,” said HSCDSB Superintendent of Education, Maria Esposito.
 
“Our teachers, school and board support staff, principals and parents are highly commended for their tireless efforts in supporting student learning.  We applaud our students for their hard work and determination in improving their knowledge and skills to become capable, competent readers, writers and mathematicians,” added Esposito.
 
In the OSSLT testing Academic level students achieved a 96-per cent success rate which is above the provincial average of 94-per cent.  Applied level students had a 47-per cent success rate which was slightly below the provincial average of 50-per cent.
 
Details of EQAO results released in September are being analyzed by Board administrators, principals and school teams to gain a better understanding of where to focus for improvement. 
 
Data will be used in school improvements plans for student achievement.
