Hospital welcomes new board members

The Board of Directors is the governing body of Sault Area Hospital (SAH) and is responsible for exercising governance authority and setting policy direction.

The SAH Board of Directors has now filled all Board and Committee vacancies. Board members are important in shaping the future of SAH as they work in collaboration with health care partners to achieve an integrated health care system in Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma.

We are pleased to welcome our newest Board members - Jim McLean, Brian Bumbacco and Dr. Roger Boyer.

The Board has also recruited new community members to sit on Committees of the Board. Community members are an integral voice on these committees of the Board.

We welcome Mia Carella, Trevor Rachkowski, Armand Capisciolto and Asima Vezina.

Biographies

Board Members:

Jim McLean - Jim is a Senior Financial Services Leader with extensive and progressive experience in Canadian domestic retail banking and global wealth solutions. Born in the Sault Ste. Marie area, Jim is a strategic thinker who has led, coached and mentored high performing teams to deliver outstanding business results and corporate objectives. In his professional career, Jim held many senior roles and was the Regional Vice President for Algoma District with the Royal Bank of Canada from 2005-2009, overseeing the operations for the entire marketplace, comprised of some seven communities and twelve individual operations. In addition, at that time Jim undertook a broad variety of efforts with numerous community support organizations, including the United Way of Sault Ste. Marie/Algoma where he led fundraising efforts as Vice Chair and Chair of the annual campaigns. Jim received his Hon B. Commerce from the University of Windsor in 1984, is married (Jocelyne) with one daughter.

Brian Bumbacco – Brian joined the SAH Board in 2018 and is a member of the Resource and Audit Committees. He holds an Honours Economics and Accounting Degree and is a Chartered Professional Accountant and a Chartered Accountant. Brian is currently the Vice-President of Finance Strategy, Systems and Programs at the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation and is accountable for developing an integrated finance strategy, the transformation and continuous improvement of the division, oversight of finance systems and the design, maintenance and monitoring of internal controls. Previous experience includes roles in Treasury, Finance, Auditing and Advisory services including Chief Financial Officer at Community First Credit Union and Senior Manager at KPMG LLP. Brian’s volunteer experience includes being a Board Member with Sault Major Hockey Association, Sault Downtown Rotary Club, as well as supporting our local youth as a minor hockey coach.

Dr. Roger Boyer – In 2009, Dr. Boyer returned home to Mississauga First Nation, where his Great Grandfather Moses Boyer and Great Grandmother Sophie Niganawana (Morningstar) lived their lives. His grandmother, Martha White-Boyer, taught him the importance of education and to be an advocate for our people. In 2004, he started advocating for systemic change through his work with Alberta’s Provincial Co-Management Suicide Reduction Committee. This professional experience has provided him with the skill base to cultivate the values needed for change beside communities in developing sustainable wellness plan within their citizenship particularly adolescents and young adults. His success and continued learning has been focused on role modeling positive change while learning from negative experience. This role modeling is supported through his choice to walk in a way which does not including drugs or alcohol instead ceremony and culture. This choice has provided bedrock of harmony to lead his family. Academically, Dr. Boyer received his Bachelors of Science degree with a double area of concentration in Biology and Chemistry, a Masters of Divinity and Doctorate of Philosophy in Intercultural Studies with a focus on Cultural Anthropology and Cross-Cultural Leadership. His passion for quality drove him to study under Don Berwick at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (ihi.org) becoming a Certified Improvement Advisor (IA). This knowledge has aided in the development of a holistic worldview to healthcare system design, implementation and evaluation through an evidence-based decision framework. Both quality improvement and care are foundation to his practice as a health leader. He is registered at a Certified Health Executive (CHE) from the Canadian College of Health Leaders and was chosen by this College as a Difference Maker. For the past fourteen years, Dr. Boyer has sat under the guidance of both mainstream and indigenous elders to better understand the model of health and well-being at home. His work has carried him to become a Health Director to a Director of Comprehensive Primary Health Care and now the Innovation Lead and Founder of Makwa Wise: Wellness Innovations Solutions Everyday. This company focuses on outsourcing healthcare management, implementing quality assurance and improvement frameworks for streamlining work and process flows, medical supply chain mobilization and consulting with academic research focused on health and wellbeing (i.e. McMaster and St. Michael’s Well Living House under Dr. Janet Smylie).

Community Members:

Mia Carella - Originally from Sault Ste. Marie, Mia practices law as an Associate Lawyer at Wishart Law Firm LLP. In addition to her law degree, Mia holds an Honours Degree in Sociology, a Certificate in Human Resources Practices and a Certificate of Training in Facilitative Mediation. In law school, Mia was a member of Amnesty International where she was involved in bringing awareness to human rights. She was also a member of the Italian Law Society where she was able to enjoy celebration of her culture and continues to do so by recently becoming a member of the Elettra Marconi Society. In addition, Mia gives back to her community in a variety of ways including becoming a Member of the Board of Directors for the St. Mary’s River Marine Heritage Centre and most recently, a Community Member with the SAH Board of Directors.

Trevor Rachkowski - Trevor is the District Vice President, Superior North, and has been with TD for over 16 years. He is proud to be leading the branches across a vast district (over 1300 kms) in Northern Ontario. He has moved across the country, working with great people and gaining experiences that included various Retail Banking roles, Finance and Operations, District Vice President for the Simcoe area and leading the distribution function for TD Life and Health Insurance. Trevor is passionate about creating a legendary experience for customers and employees, developing talent and building TD's Brand. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Laurentian University and an MBA from University of Windsor. Trevor lives in Echo Bay with his wife, Kristy and new-born son, Noah

Armand Capisciolto (FCPA, FCA; CPA - Michigan) – Armand is a National Accounting Standards Partner, BDO Canada LLP. He provides leadership to BDO on all matters related to accounting standards, advice and opinions on accounting and financial reporting technical matters and develops and disseminates internal and external technical releases, client publications and training in the areas of accounting and financial reporting. In his role, Armand is also a Member of BDO International’s IFRS Working Party and the IFRS leader for BDO International’s Americas Region. Armand is actively involved in accounting standard setting. He is a member of the Canadian Accounting Standards Board (AcSB) and chairs the AcSB’s Private Enterprise Advisory Committee. Armand is also a past member of the AcSB’s IFRS Discussion Group and the Public Sector Accounting Board’s Public Section Accounting Discussion Group. Armand’s community involvement includes being a Former Member of the Board of Directors of the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation.

Asima Vezina - Asima joined the Algoma University leadership team as President and ViceChancellor in 2017, bringing with her more than 25 years of experience in education. Asima is well known to the community of Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding areas. She was raised in the communities of Bruce Mines and Desbarats and currently resides in Sault Ste. Marie with her husband, Mitch and two children, Eric and Emilie. Beginning her teaching career in Timmins, Ontario, Asima has worked in various administrative roles within communities across Northern Ontario, including 15 years as a Superintendent of Education with the Timmins and Algoma District School Boards; as well, she has worked in government for the Ministry of Education as a Provincial Lead within the Student Achievement Division. She has also served as vice-chair of the Council of Chairs of Ontario Universities. A dedicated proponent of community partnership and strong relationships with stakeholders, Asima has been an active member on several community tables and Boards including the Local Immigration Partnership, SSM Innovation Centre, SSM Economic Development and Racial Harmony partnership tables. She has also coled the development of the Algoma Model; a partnership network of over 50 organizations dedicated to working together in supporting children and youth mental health.
