SooToday received the following note from reader Colleen Crowley regarding something she hopes could turn into a new Mother's Day tradition:

There's a new Mother's Day tradition people may want to embrace. It's called Mothers, Sons and Daughters for Mother Earth and those behind this movement hope it really catches on.

On Mother’s Day, May 9, everyone who is a mother, son or daughter, (yes, that’s everyone!), is invited to spend one hour of their day picking up trash, throughout their community, to give a gift to the greatest mother of all, Mother Earth!

People are encouraged to participate with their families/loved ones and maintain physical distancing where appropriate.

For the past two springs and summer seasons, university students Lara Crowley–Strom and Tayte Nowak, have been promoting and carrying-out their "Trash Tuesdays" initiative in response to all the garbage throughout the city of Sault Ste. Marie.

Every Tuesday (or any day of the week) they and other supporters pick up trash for 30 minutes to an hour in their neighbourhoods.

This year, Lara’s mom, Colleen, decided that she would like to take this a step further and do something for the environment to celebrate Mother’s Day in a meaningful way. The idea for Mothers, Sons and Daughters for Mother Earth germinated and now she is busy spreading the word about this event.

So if you see our planet as your home, and, you want your home to be healthy and beautiful, join this initiative and give a small gift to Mother Earth on Sunday, May 9. There is no set time to participate, so choose what’s best for you and your family and please wear sturdy gloves and footwear for your own safety.
