Documentary on young entrepreneurs to be screened at The Tech

Film celebrates risk-taking, urban revitalization, and diversity while delivering a vital call-to-action

StartUP Sault Ste. Marie and YouLaunch are hosting a screening of GENERATION STARTUP, a documentary that takes us to the front lines of entrepreneurship, capturing an in-the-trenches look at the struggles and triumphs of six recent college graduates who put everything on the line to launch startups in Detroit.

The film will be screened on Nov. 16 (6 - 9 p.m. at The Tech), during Global Entrepreneurship Week, and is open to the public.

Directed by Academy Award winner Cynthia Wade and Academy Award-nominated Cheryl Houser, the film celebrates risk-taking, urban revitalization, and diversity while delivering a vital call-to-action—with entrepreneurship at a record low, the country’s economic future is at stake.

The young men and women of GENERATION STARTUP are part of Venture For America (VFA), a program that sends recent college graduates to work at startups in fifteen cities around the country to train as entrepreneurs, and then helps them launch their own companies.

Despite the widely held stereotype of 20-somethings as entrepreneurs, entrepreneurship among 18-34 year olds is at a 24-year low. StartUP Sault, YouLaunch and our community partners help entrepreneurs to start and grow businesses in Sault Ste. Marie.

We all have a stake in growing our community, so let’s do what we can to support young entrepreneurs.

The evening will include networking, cash bar, popcorn and snacks. Following the film screening, a panel discussion and Q&A, including Mayor Provenzano, will take place to discuss how entrepreneurship can help grow our community, and how the community can come together as a whole to reinvent and reinvigorate Sault Ste. Marie.

Established in 2015, YouLaunch is the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre’s youth entrepreneur program which acts as a catalyst for youth entrepreneur development in the Sault and Algoma region.
