The Club Calabrese of Sault Ste. Marie believes strongly in the healthcare of their members and the community.

They made a generous donation of $5,000 to the Sault Area Hospital Foundation to support the purchase of new cardiac bricks that are used throughout the hospital.

At their recent membership meeting at the Marconi Club, Ingo Schuurhuis, Manager of Operating Room, Surgical and Endoscopy Programs at the Sault Area Hospital spoke to the members on the need for the replacement of 14 of the 30 cardiac bricks that are presently used in the hospital.

These pieces of equipment monitor the cardiac rhythm of the patient in addition to oxygen levels and other very important vital signs.

They are very small and portable and record within the piece of equipment all of the information for future reference by physicians and nurses.

Each unit costs $8,000 and is very beneficial for patients and staff because of the portability.

Club Calabrese President, Albert Novello said ”the club consists of approximately 400 members locally and is a non-profit charitable association dedicated to supporting the sick, the needy and many social agencies. We hold many fundraising events throughout the year and we raise money for the sole purpose of helping those in need.”

“We are most grateful for the generosity from the Club Calabrese,” said Cheryl Pavoni, Executive Director of the Foundation. “It is this type of community support that allows the Foundation to continue to purchase the new equipment required each year for the Sault Area Hospital. As the primary source of funding for any new equipment, this goes a long way in assisting us in reaching our goal each year.”

The total money required this year to meet the new equipment needs of the hospital is $1.25 million.
