Judy Garland in the Wizard of Oz crooned: “Somewhere over the rainbow; Skies are blue; And the Dreams that you dare to dream; Really do come true.” Kelly and Jayce Kennedy Price, a mom and her trans son, say that those dreams also come true under the rainbow.

The Prices will be reading from their autobiographical book: “Somewhere Under the Rainbow” on June 26, at 4 p.m. EDT. The event will be live-streamed on Rainbow Camp’s YouTube channel, hosted by Canadian comedic legends Colin Mochrie, of “Who’s Line Is It Anyway?” and his wife Deb McGrath, of “Little Mosque on the Prairie,” and “The Ron James Show.”

In Kelly Price’s words: “The book is an exploration of what it’s like to live under the Rainbow, what it’s like to parent kids who live their lives beneath those brilliant colors, and what we’d like the world to know. We believe the voices of ordinary families who are on journeys that involve gender expansiveness need to be louder.”

Mochrie and McGrath have a transgender daughter Kinley, so they want to normalize and celebrate all 2SLGBTQ+ people.

McGrath said: “We are loud and proud parents and our job is to make it normal for people for whom it isn’t normal yet. Anyone can attend: whether you have questions, or already an ally, are going through a transition or supporting someone who is.” McGrath added: “We want trans kids to know how loved they are.”

The book reading will benefit Rainbow Camp, just east of Sault Ste. Marie, in Northern Ontario, Canada. Co-founders of Rainbow Camp and husbands Harry Stewart and Chris Southin, who are the recipients of the Governor General's Meritorious Service Medal for their work with two-spirited, lesbian, gay, bi, trans, and queer questioning (2SLGBTQ+) youth opened Rainbow Camp in 2012.

Since Rainbow Camp doesn’t turn away campers who can’t afford the travel and camp fees, a number of fundraisers take place annually, including the upcoming book reading.

To access the book reading, people can go to www.youtube.com/rainbowcamp. There is a button to set up a reminder for the live stream event on June 26 at 4 pm EDT.

About Rainbow Camp

Rainbow camp is a welcoming, inclusive, safe space for 2SLGBTQ+ 12-17-year-olds to experience summer camp. Founded in 2012 and run by members of the LGBTQ+ community (including many former campers), Rainbow Camp is committed to developing a camp community honouring creativity, individual choice, and social justice, while having fun. Situated in the pristine wilderness just East of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Rainbow Camp has welcomed over 500 campers from across North America since 2012.

Over 70 per cent of campers are subsidized based on financial need, to ensure that everyone can attend. Campers call it a life-changing experience, and in some cases, a life-saving experience. Husbands Harry Stewart and Chris Southin, were recently selected as recipients of the Governor General's Meritorious Service Medal for co-founding Rainbow Camp and for their work in support of LGBTQ2S+ youth. An anonymous donor is currently matching up to $20,000 in donations. Donate today at helprainbowcamp.ca.

The camp is organized by the Welcome Friend Association, a registered charity that provides outreach to and support for people affected by gender and sexual issues. They are online at: www.WelcomeFriend.ca.
