The Department of History and Philosophy at Algoma University is pleased to announce that Dr. Brayton Polka of York University will be giving a public lecture, titled “Existence Divine and Human: The Significance of Spinoza Today” on Sept. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Doc Brown Lounge.

Brayton Polka is a Senior Scholar and Professor Emeritus of Humanities and of Social and Political Thought at York University. Polka is also a member of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and of the Centre for Jewish Studies.

He earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in History from Harvard University. His research interests are centred on hermeneutics.

Some of his best-known published works to date include The Dialectic of Biblical Critique: Interpretation and Existence (1986); Truth and Interpretation: An Essay in Thinking (1990); Depth Psychology, Interpretation, and the Bible: An Ontological Essay on Freud (2001); and Shakespeare and Interpretation, or What You Will (2011).

Polka’s lecture will focus on the life and works of Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza (1632 – 1677). Spinoza is considered one of the greatest rationalists of the seventeenth-century.
