Summer is coming to an end for parents and students and this means getting ready for back-to-school. With so much to do between trying to squeeze in a few more summer activities and shopping, this time of year can be chaotic. But you can do yourself a favour and save some time and money by following these tips from Kidney Clothes.

Tip 1 – Take inventory before you shop.
Spend some time going through school supplies from last year and see what can be reused this year. Do the same with closets. Check to see what fits and what doesn’t. Make a list of what you have and what you need. Gather up the things that don’t fit anymore and put aside for pick up by Kidney Clothes.

Tip 2 – Set a budget
Know how much you have to spend and don’t go over your limit. It may help to allocate so much of the budget to clothes, so much to school supplies, and so on to help keep things in check.

Tip 3 – Buy secondhand
That budget goes a lot further when you shop secondhand. You can find clothes for less that are often practically new -- especially clothing for younger kids who grow out of clothing so fast, they’ve hardly worn an item before it’s too small. You can find supplies like binders and backpacks at secondhand stores too!

There is a lot of shopping and spending involved in getting ready for back-to-school, but it can also be a great opportunity to teach your kids about giving back. Once the shopping is done and the closets are organized, you can donate the things that don’t fit or are out of style to Kidney Clothes.

Arrange a pick up by calling 1-800-414-3484 or visit the website at kidneyclothes.ca. You will make room for new and useful items and at the same time support people in your community living with kidney disease.

If you’re kids are older, Kidney Clothes also has a great way to help them earn the volunteer hours they need to graduate high school by hosting a Kidney Clothes Drive! Hosting a clothing drive is easy.

Students spread the word that they are participating and ask people for donations of their unwanted clothing and cloth-based items (like outerwear, shoes and bedding). The clothing collected will be picked up by Kidney Clothes and repurposed into funds that The Kidney Foundation of Canada uses to support people in the community living with kidney disease.

If you or someone you know wants to earn volunteer hours, help people in our community and protect the environment, contact Debbie Dunham at [email protected] to learn more about this or other volunteer opportunities.
