Annual scholarship dinner to honour Frank Sarlo

The 2017 Algoma University John R. Rhodes Scholarship Dinner will take place on Thursday, Oct. 26 at The Water Tower Inn at 6 p.m.  This year’s dinner will honour Dr. Frank S. Sarlo.
 
From Sault Ste. Marie, Sarlo earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Windsor and his Bachelor of Law from Osgoode Hall in Toronto. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1969 and was later appointed to the Queen’s Counsel by the Province of Ontario in 1985. He specialized in corporate and commercial law for almost 40 years in Sault Ste. Marie-based law firms Caputo Sarlo Irwin, Sarlo O’Neill, and most recently Wishart Law Firm LLP. Upon retirement, Sarlo earned his PhD from the University of Bristol.

Sarlo took a leadership role in many important successful initiatives that required bringing together community members and resources to meet specific challenges or goals. Sarlo served as Chair of the Community Action Team, which was formed to support the restructuring of Algoma Steel Corporation, Chair of the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation, as well as Chair of Sault Ste. Marie’s major Homecoming Festival in 1998. Sarlo has received numerous awards for his efforts, including the Harry Hamilton Award for Community Service, the Paul Dalseg Community Achievement Award, and the Governor General of Canada’s Commemorative Medal for the 125^thAnniversary of the Confederation of Canada.
 
“Algoma University is pleased to honour Dr. Sarlo for all of his accomplishments, both personally and professionally. Dr. Sarlo has had a distinguished and diverse professional and personal career. His contributions to the community are numerous and he has generously supported many causes and organizations in an effort to build and strengthen our community,” said Les Dunbar, Chair of the John Rhodes Dinner Committee.
 
This year’s dinner will also highlight the lives of the late Honourable James Greco and Dr. Lou Lukenda, previous John R. Rhodes Scholarship Dinner honourees, who passed in 2017. Donations can be made to the John R. Rhodes Scholarship or the Dr. Lou & Mae Lukenda Charitable Foundation Award in their honour.
 
The John R. Rhodes Scholarship was established in 1979 thanks to generous contributions from friends and family of the late John Rhodes. The prestigious scholarship, valued at $3,000, is offered to a high school graduate who embodies the integrity, leadership, and commitment to community service demonstrated by Rhodes throughout his life as a broadcaster, community member, and politician. The scholarship is renewable for up to three additional years, providing the recipient maintains a minimum average of 80.0 per cent each academic year.
 
Tickets for the John R. Rhodes Scholarship Dinner are $150.00 per person and are selling fast.
