Algoma Family Service to host first End the Silence Workshop

Algoma Family Services (AFS) in partnership with the Algoma Council on Domestic Violence will host the first End the Silence Workshop on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017. The workshop is free for all women in the community who want to heal from the impact of abuse and trauma through artwork.

The event has taken place in the past as another format but none has taken the form of an art therapy workshop.

The workshop is being led by art therapist Maria Parrella-ilaria of OpenART Studios. Each individual participant will be provided with the requirements to succeed during this workshop to fully obtain the benefits of therapy through art.

“As facilitators of the Art Expression and Creating Connections Program, we have witnessed the profound impact the use of expressive arts has on the healing process. This workshop breaks the silence about women traumatized by domestic violence. These courageous participants are to be commended for their willingness to share their work and help promote awareness of these issues,” says Danielle Ayotte, AFS Family Violence Team.

The workshop will take place at OLG Casino at 30 Bay Street, Sault Ste. Marie from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 7. Food and beverages will be provided to all participants.

Registration is required by Jan. 31, 2017. To register or for more information please contact Monique at (705) 945-5050 ext. 2709.
