Joe Kelly and his service dog, Ally received a $120 donation from the staff at the Queen St. Lounge & The Beauty Lounge in support of the Algoma Veterans Association (AVA). The funds where raised from donations during the Queenstown Moonlight Madness hot chocolate contest.

“The general public was very generous once they knew that their donation was supporting the AVA and local veterans," Laura Harten, barber at the Queen St. Lounge, stated. "We found out that the Queen St. Lounge came in a close fourth in the contest, we actually ran out of the supplied cups by 7:30 and had to scramble to get more cups.”

As Vice President of the AVA, Joe Kelly has seen the membership grow significantly from its early days. Joe and Ally had a chance to meet the other staff members of the Queen St. Lounge, Jackie Socchia, Leanne Mackenzie – Murdock.

Also assisting with the Hot Chocolate Contest where staff from the Beauty Lounge, owner Roberta Socchia and Monique Minelli located in the same building at 512 Queen St.

The Algoma Veterans Association is a Not for Profit organization that is in the process of receiving chartable status. Once they receive this status, the AVA Executive Board will begin applying for funding through Veterans Affairs and the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund. They can then proceed in attaining a goal of a local permanent recreational home for Veterans to receive support with PTSD and other disabilities related to their military service.

The AVA recently has also received donations from a group of anonymous donors that see the importance of the goal of supporting local veterans. To learn more about the AVA please visit, https://algomaveterans.org/
