Algoma U raises over $5,000 for the United Way

This year, 2,600 people attended the Community Trick or Treat event and 41,000 pieces of candy were handed out

Algoma University raised an impressive $5,441 for the United Way campaign during its Spooktacular Campus event on Oct. 30.

For the event, families dressed in costume and went trick or treating around the Spooktacular Campus. A total of 25 stops were decorated by faculty, staff and students. Trick or treaters visited such haunts as the woodshop of horrors, a mad scientist’s lab, candy land, and more.

“United Way has enjoyed a four-year partnership with Algoma University for their Community Trick or Treat event,” said Sonny Spina, United Way Campaign chair. “The event offers a safe and fun environment for families to enjoy Halloween, with young and old alike dressing up as their favourite characters. United Way volunteers and staff look forward to helping Algoma U welcome the community to the ‘Spooktacular Campus.’ We are thankful to be the recipient of this annual event which supports all in our community. Thanks to Algoma U, their students and staff for their efforts and to the community for coming together for a great cause.”

This year, 2,600 people attended the Community Trick or Treat event and 41,000 pieces of candy were handed out. In the years since the event started, Algoma University has raised over $10,000 for the campaign.

“It is wonderful to see our community supporting both Algoma University and the United Way campaign," said Asima Vezina, president and vice-chancellor of Algoma University. “The United Way leads very important work in our community and we are proud to once again contribute to the annual campaign. It was a wonderful night to see our community's youngest children walking the spooky halls of our campus in search of treats. I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge the amazing team of volunteers from the University community who volunteered their time to dress up, decorate their areas and host a great community event.”
