Country Way made their move up the Women's Hockey League standings this week with a pair of shutout victories to pull into a tie for first place overall.

With the pair of wins, Country Way moves into a tie for the league lead with Source for Sports with each team holding a 5-2 record for 10 points after five weeks of league play.

The following is a recap of week five action provided courtesy of the WHL's Lori Springall:

A pair of shut out wins for Country Way has tied them for first overall with Source for Sports. Both teams each have five wins and two losses.

Country Way defeated Lafarge 5-0 in Sunday's action. Rookie Kristy Kernaghen scored her first career goal and added another, along with one assist, to lead Country Way. Fellow rookie, Sherry Boston, also scored twice while teammate Christine Trivers had a goal and an assist. Other assists went to Andrea Moraca and Brenda Frey.

On Monday night, Country Way downed Palmer Paving 2-0 with Denise "Deeter" Goldade scoring once and adding one assist. Sherry "Sniper" Boston continued her scoring rampage with another goal and one assist. Pick up goalie, Teri Bonnell had both shut outs for Country Way.

Meanwhile, Source for Sports, Lafarge and Crawford's Canines each split their weekend games.

Source started with a 5-4 win against the Canines on the strength of Lois Pine's four points. Pine scored twice, including the winner, and added two assists. Rookie Trish Secondi scored her first career goal with a hard shot from the slot.

Karen Gartshore also scored once while Leah-Anne Pine had a goal and two assists. Other assists went to Penny Souliere and Mona Jones. Scoring for Crawford's were Christine Robertson with two, Elaine Angelic and Carrie Mancuso. Tanya Dowding had three assists.

Source for Sports met with defeat the next night, losing 4-3 to Skip's Kweok. Mona Jones' first hat trick of the season wasn't enough as Skip's responded with goals from Joy Agawa, Joanne Pine, Natalie Barry and Kyla Sewell. Nancy O'Donnell had one assist for Skip's while Lois Pine and Karen Gartshore pitched in with one assist each for Source for Sports.

The win for Skip's Kweok puts them into a three-way tie for second place. Kweok, Palmer Paving and Crawford's Canines all sit just two points ahead of Lafarge.

Lafarge rebounded from Sunday's 5-0 loss to defeat Algoma Insurance 4-2. Debbie "Bam Bam" Beauchamp scored twice for Lafarge, including the winner. Suzanne Dunn and Beth Tetreault also scored. Tetreault, Betty Buck, Alicia Pollock, Michelle Walls and Brenda Huibers all collected one assist each. Jenny Sayers scored her first of the season for Algoma Insurance. Laurie Laudadio had the other goal. Julie Hodkinson had the only assist for Algoma.

Crawford's Canines also bounced back from an earlier loss, skating to a 4-2 win over Investors Group. Barb Willoughby scored twice and had one assist for the Canines. Elaine Angelic added one goal and an assist while Heidi Frech scored her first of the year and also added one assist. Replying for Investors Group were Patti Lutz and Ellen MacDougall. Francine Floreani had one assist.

Action continues this Sunday at McMeeken from 4pm-6pm and Monday in Echo Bay from 6:30pm-10:30pm.
