Wildcats take home gold at provincials

This marked their last season as the WIldcats, as they will now join forces with the Soo Greyhounds for the 2019-2020 hockey season

SAULT STE. MARIE MIDGET C WILDCATS

Seven competitive Sault Wildcat teams from various age groups travelled to the greater Toronto area this past weekend to compete at the Ontario Women's Hockey Association Provincial tournament. This particular group included girls ages 15-17, representing the Midget C division.

Midget C teams all across Ontario had to compete throughout the 2018-2019 hockey season to win a berth in this prestigious OWHA event.

16 Midget C teams were successful in advancing to the Midget C division at the OWHA provincial playoffs April 5-7.

In game one against the Central Perth Predators, they took home a 2-0 win. In game two against the Kincardine Kinucks, they pulled off a 4-2 win. Game three against the Belmont Blazers gave the Wildcats a 4-0 win.

Quarterfinals against Gloucester Cumberland Stars saw the Sault tie the game late in the third with a mere 12 seconds remaining on the clock. Three overtime periods later, the Wildcats scored in just under four minutes to take a 4-3 win.

Next was a 4-2 semi final game win against South Bruce Blades.

The Wildcats advanced to the championship game, beating the Nepean Wildcats winning 3-1. Winning goals were scored by Amelia Spacek, Tyra Giasson and Maddy Headrick.

Coaching staff include head coach Leni Mazzuca, Assistant Coaches Tim O’Connor, Geordie McGugan, Gerri Longo, Trainer Christine King and Managers Josie Mazzuca and Shirley Yun, supported by Mitch Levesque, statistician. Players include Paige Koivisto, Tyra Giasson, Audrey O’Connor, Sophie Thibault, Maddie Headrick, Hailey Telik, Maisie Robere-McGugan, Elisabeth Richardson, Makayla Mazzuca, Bree Hodkinson, Amelia Spacek, Nui Nui Yun, Maddy Lawrence-Bookman, Brianna Barban, Lauren Stevens and goalies Amber Goslow and Jo Levesque.

With the Sault Female Hockey Association joining forces with the Soo Greyhounds for the 2019-2020 hockey season, the SFHA Wildcats will now be rebranded as the Jr Greyhounds. This unbelievable weekend will serve as a lasting and memorable win for the SFHA Wildcat legacy. Go Wildcats!
