A tough weekend came to a close for the Soo Thunderbirds on Sunday.

The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League club dropped a 3-1 decision to the Rayside Balfour Canadians Sunday evening at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

Goals just over four minutes apart by Baldino Aiello and Kyle Liinamaa in the third period were the difference. The goals came after Lucas Theriault tied the game at one early in the final period.

Evan Krassey had the other goal for the Canadians.

Thunderbirds goaltender Brandon Gordon made 36 saves while Brayden Lachance made 31 saves for the Canadians.

Rayside moves to within four points of the Thunderbirds for top spot in the NOJHL’s West Division with the victory. The Thunderbirds hold a 29-10-2-1 record while the Canadians, winners of five in a row, improve to 27-12-2-1.

After winning on Friday night, the Thunderbirds dropped a 5-1 decision to the Blind River Beavers on Saturday night. The Beavers remain in the mix in the West Division as well, sitting three points behind the Thunderbirds.

On Saturday, Beavers goaltender Cam Bruggrabe made 47 saves while Zach Senecal and Max Khull had a goal and an assist each. Gordon made 43 saves for the Thunderbirds in the loss.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Feb. 2 on the road in Elliot Lake against the Wildcats.
