After an unexpected week off, the Sault Sabercats varsity team advanced in Ontario Football Conference playoff action on Sunday evening in Barrie.
The Sabercats picked up a narrow 14-10 victory over the Huronia Stallions to advance to the OFC North Division final, set for next weekend against the Peterborough Wolverines.
Trailing 10-8 in the second half, Greg Caruso got the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter and the Sabercats managed to stop a late-game drive by the Stallions to advance.
A touchdown by Nick Fowler in the opening half completed the Sabercats scoring in the victory.
Peterborough advanced thanks to a 36-7 win at home against the Sudbury Gladiators on Saturday evening.
Peterborough enters the game unbeaten after going 6-0 through the regular season and earning an opening round playoff bye before beating Sudbury. The Sabercats went 4-2 in the regular season, which included four-straight wins, before earning a first round win over the Vaughan Rebels and then beating Huronia on Sunday.
The winner of the Sabercats/Wolverines matchup will face the OFC’s South Division winner in the league final in early August. The South Division final will see the Toronto Jr. Argos face the Brantford Bisons,
The Argos, who finished the regular season 6-0, advanced thanks to a 49-0 win over the Forest City Thunderbirds on Sunday while the Bisons, 4-2, advanced following a 35-16 win over Halton Hills on Saturday.
