A strong defensive effort and a key play will give the Sault Sabercats varsity team an opportunity to win a division title and compete for an Ontario Football Conference championship.

Coming off a narrow 14-10 victory over the Huronia Stallions in Barrie on Sunday evening, the Sabercats return to action on the road on Saturday evening in Peterborough where the team will face the Peterborough Wolverines, with the winner capturing the North Division playoff title and competing for the OFC championship.

“In order for us to be successful and get the win (against Peterborough), we’re going to have to execute almost perfectly,” Sabercats Coach Matt Premo said earlier this week.

Premo expects a “close game” against the unbeaten Wolverines, who advanced over the weekend thanks to a 36-7 victory at home over Sudbury on Saturday night.

Against Huronia, Greg Caruso scored the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter to lift the Sabercats to the victory.

The Wolverines earned a first round bye in the playoffs thanks to a 6-0 regular season record.

The Sabercats finished the regular season with a 4-2 record with the losses coming in the opening two weeks of the season.

Premo said health isn’t a concern heading into the division final.

“This is the healthiest we’ve been all season,” Premo said.

Premo would also say that the Sabercats seeing some success after a tough start has the confidence level up.

“The guys are really feeling good about themselves,” Premo also said. “They’ve been through a lot of adversity this year with injuries.”

“They’re confident that if they play up to their potential that we can be successful,” Premo added.

The lone meeting between the Wolverines and Sabercats saw Peterborough pick up a 35-13 in week one at Superior Heights on May 27.

Kickoff for Saturday’s game is set for 5 p.m.

The winner of the Sabercats/Wolverines game will meet the winner of the OFC’s South Division in the league final in early August. The South Division final will see the Toronto Jr. Argos face the Brantford Bisons. Toronto went 6-0 in the regular season and advanced to the division final after a 49-0 win over the Forest City Thunderbirds on Sunday while Brantford (4-2) moved on following a 35-16 win over Halton Hills on Saturday.
