Top Honours for Acton at Rotary Awards

Brigitte Acton received the city's top athletic honour on Tuesday night as she was presented with the H.P. Broughton Trophy at the 47th Annual Rotary Sports Award Banquet at the Marconi Club.

The Broughton Trophy is presented annually to the Sault's Sportsperson of the year. Acton beat out Nordic skier Victoria Koskenoja and the St. Mary's Knights senior football team for the honour.

Acton was recognized for her efforts as an alpine skier. Acton, currently a member of the National Development Team, won a world championship silver medal and national championship this past season.

Bawating's Evan Timusk won the Walter Lowe Trophy as top high school athlete while White Pines' Tyler Koskenoja won the B'nai B'rith Award for the graduating student best combining athletics and education.

Sir James Dunn won the Ross Winslade Trophy for the secondary school accumulating the most points in boys and girls athletics in the Algoma District School Board.

Individual sporting honours were received by St. Mary's Matt Chaimbrone in basketball, Adam Zuccacco in football and Rocky Robitaille in cross-country. Sir James Dunn's Dylan Fryia won the wrestling honour while Ryan Harden won the curling award.

White Pines' Ryan Maunu was selected in hockey and Koskenoja won the track and field honours. Timusk won the badminton award.

Pam Torgerson, Richard Annett and Bev Holmes were inducted into the Russ Ramsay High School Sports Hall of Fame, for their years of effort in the high school sports program.
