The Soo Thunderbirds capped off a weekend road trip on Sunday with a victory.

The Thunderbirds beat the French River Rapids 4-2 on Sunday in the final game of a three-game Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League road trip.

Goaltender William Anderson made 49 saves, including 39 over the final two periods.

Nick Smith paced the Thunderbirds with a pair of goals.

Lucas Theriualt and Avery Rebek also scored.

Hunter Brazier and Levi Siau scored for French River.

Rapids goaltender Kevin Tardiff stopped 32 shots.

Off the ice, the Thunderbirds received good news. Following action in Kirkland Lake on Friday night, the team had two sets of goalie pads stolen from the team bus while it was parked at a hotel in Kirkland Lake.

After an investigation, the Ontario Provincial Police were able to recover the stolen pads and get them returned to the team ahead of Sunday’s game.

Following Sunday’s win, the Thunderbirds improve to 28-9-0-1 ahead of a pair of home games this week.

The Thunderbirds host the Espanola Express on Thursday and the Powassan Voodoos on Friday night. Both games are scheduled as 7 p.m. starts at the GFL Memorial Gardens.

Sunday’s loss drops French River’s record to 12-25-2-1.
