The Soo Thunderbirds remain the only unbeaten team in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League after a 9-4 win over the Blind River Beavers at the John Rhodes Community Centre on Wednesday night.
Through ten regular season games, the Thunderbirds boast an 8-0-2 record and sit 10 points ahead of the Northern Michigan Black Bears in the NOJHL's west division.
The Beavers fall to 2-8-0-1 and remain in third spot in the west division.
On Wednesday night, Mike MacMillan, who added three assists, and Aaron Anderson, who added one assist, led the Thunderbirds with two goals each.
Single goals were scored by D.J. Jelitto, Kelly Thomson, who added three assists, Andrew Jakubaitis, Tom Vernelli and Josh Leddy. Ryan MacKay recorded two assists for the Thunderbirds.
Billy Schill led Blind River with two goals and an assist while Kittredge Hamlin and Thomas LaPlante scored a goal each.
The Thunderbirds outshot Blind River 40-12 and led by scores of 3-1 after one period and 6-3 after two periods.
Thunderbirds head coach Jim Capy sat out the second game of a four game suspension on Wednesday as Rob Stopar handled the bench duties.
In another NOJHL contest on Wednesday, Brian McGarry scored the game winner on the power play in the third period as the Sudbury Northern Wolves defeated the Abitibi Eskimos 3-2.
The Thunderbirds are back in action on Friday night in a big contest against the North Bay Skyhawks at the Rhodes beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Skyhawks have an 8-1 record and will host the Dudley Hewitt Cup, symbolic of the Central Canadian Championship in late April.
The Thunderbirds complete their homestand on Sunday night against the Rayside Balfour Sabrecats at 6 p.m.
