Thunderbirds take early series lead

An overtime goal lifted the Soo Thunderbirds to a series-opening victory

The Soo Thunderbirds have drawn first blood in its Northern Ontario Hockey League playoff series with the Soo (Mich.) Eagles.

Tristan Cicchello scored at 11:06 of the first overtime period to give the Thunderbirds a 4-3 win over the Eagles.

Spencer Van Tiem had a goal and an assist to pace the Thunderbirds offensively while goaltender Brandon Gordon stopped 31 shots.

Nolan Ford and Kaidan McDonald also scored for the Thunderbirds.

Nick Techel had a goal and an assist for the Eagles. Kobe Keller assisted on a pair of Eagles goals while William Casey and Brendan Blair also scored.

Carter McPhail stopped 29 shots for the Eagles.

The two teams meet for game two on Monday night at the John Rhodes Community Centre. Puck drop for the contest is 7:30 p.m.
