A return to home ice was what the Soo Thunderbirds needed.

Just 24 hours after a lopsided loss to the Soo Eagles at Pullar Stadium on Friday night, the Thunderbirds would beat the Eagles 2-1 on Saturday at the John Rhodes Community Centre on Saturday night in the back-end of the home-and-home weekend set.

Mark Tassone’s shorthanded goal at 17:23 of the second period was the game-winning goal for the Thunderbirds.

Alex Acosta got the Thunderbirds on the board in the late stages of the opening period just 3:01 after the Eagles opened the scoring in the contest.

Brandon Gordon made 23 saves for the Thunderbirds.

Gianni Vitali had the lone goal for the Eagles. Goaltender Carter McPhail made 34 saves.

The Thunderbirds improve to 31-13-1-2 while the Eagles fall to 29-17-1-0.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Feb. 17 on the road against the Espanola Express before returning home the following day to face the Elliot Lake Wildcats.
