The Soo Thunderbirds finished off a sweep of a home-and-home series with the Blind River Beavers on Saturday night.

Shootout goals by Gage Stephney and Tyler Malpass helped the Thunderbirds to a 4-3 win over the Beavers in Blind River in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action.

In what appeared to have the makings of a high-scoring contest, Blind River took an early 2-1 lead after the teams combined for three goals in the opening 3:10 of the contest but the teams would come out of the opening period tied at two before trading goals in the second period to round out the regulation time scoring.

Nolan Ford had a goal and an assist for the Thunderbirds, while Tristan Cicchello, who was the hero on Thursday in the Thunderbirds overtime win over the Beavers at the John Rhodes Community Centre, set up a pair of Sault goals.

Stephney and Tanner Mayne also scored for the Sault.

Thunderbirds goaltender William Anderson made 27 saves and stopped both shooters he faced in the shootout.

Riley Nadeau had two goals and an assist for Blind River. Nash Hatcher also had a three-point night for the Beavers with a goal and two assists.

Beavers goaltender Thomson Phinney made 24 saves.

The Thunderbirds improve to 17-5-0-0 while Blind River falls to 12-8-4-1.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Nov. 22 in the opening game of a three-game homestand. The team is set to host the Espanola Express in a 7 p.m. puck drop at the John Rhodes Community Centre.
