Thunderbirds open regular season with home win

Regular season hockey has begun for the Soo Thunderbirds as the team faced the Soo (Mich.) Eagles on Saturday night

The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League regular season is officially underway for the Soo Thunderbirds.

The Thunderbirds scored four unanswered goals in a 7-2 win over the Soo (Mich.) Eagles on Saturday night at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

With the Thunderbirds leading 3-2, Matthew Bazarin scored a pair of goals, including a power play marker 37 seconds after the Eagles had cut the Thunderbirds lead at the time to 3-2.

Nick Smith added a goal and an assist for the Thunderbirds while Tyler Savard and Nolan Ford assisted on two goals each.

Daniel Bazarin, Brock Santa Maria, Avery Rebek, and Cooper Smyl also scored for the Thunderbirds.

Thunderbirds goaltender Colin Ahern made 26 saves.

Blake Vaca and Stephen Smoody scored for the Eagles.

Goaltender Shane Brancato stopped 27 shots for the Eagles.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Sunday night at home against the Espanola Express. Puck drop at the John Rhodes Community Centre is set for 7 p.m.
