Thunderbirds host Bell Let’s Talk Games

The Algoma Thunderbirds basketball teams return to home court this weekend to take on the Windsor Lancers this Friday and Saturday evening. Friday evening’s games, dubbed the Bell Let’s Talk Games, will focus on growing the mental health conversation through the widely success Bell Let’s Talk campaign.

As part of Bell Let’s Talk, which works to raise funds for mental health initiatives and erase the stigma around mental health, the Algoma Thunderbirds, along with other university varsity sports programs across Canada, have teamed up to help encourage positive conversations around mental health.

Over 200,000 student-athletes are participating in this year’s event, and 100 universities are hosting special Bell Let’s Talk games.

The games will feature a Bell Let’s Talk station, which includes videos highlighting student-athletes from across the OUA discussing mental health, as well as prizes for those who fill out a Bell Let’s Talk speech bubble and share their message about mental health or their commitment to end the stigma on social media.

Competition will be tough for both Thunderbirds teams. After last weekend’s win over the Waterloo Warriors, the men’s team is looking to continue their winning streak. Algoma is currently 3-8 in the OUA West, while Windsor sits on top of the division at 7-5.

“It's great to be back at home this weekend,” said men’s Head Coach Thomas Cory. “The weekend games will be very tough and we will need to control the rebounding and limit Windsor's transition game.”

On the women’s side, Algoma continues their pursuit of their first win of 2017. Algoma is currently 1-10 while the Lancers are 10-2.

“This weekend will be a challenge against a very tough and physical Windsor team,” said women’s Head Coach Ryan Vetrie. “We have to match their physicality and also push the ball and play at a high tempo. We haven’t played at home for over a month so it will be fun to play in front of our crowd once again.”

In other varsity action, the Nordic skiers will be in Orangeville, Ontario competing at the Mono Nordic Invitational.
