Thunderbirds grab overtime decision against Eagles

Bellini nets winner for Thunderbirds against Eagles

Thanks to a late goal, the Soo Thunderbirds picked up two points on Friday night on the road.

The Thunderbirds beat the Soo (Mich.) Eagles 3-2 on Friday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Pullar Stadium.

Nolan Ford scored with 1:52 to go in regulation time to force overtime and set the stage for Steven Bellini to be the hero as the veteran blueliner scored at 3:15 of overtime to give the Thunderbirds the victory.

Thunderbirds goaltender Colin Ahern made 38 saves in the win.

Matthew Bazarin had the other goal for the Thunderbirds and also assisted on a goal.

Lucas Rothe and Jake Lamberty scored for the Eagles.

Goaltender Shane Brancato made 26 saves for the Eagles.

The two teams complete their weekend home-and-home series on Saturday night at the John Rhodes Community Centre. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
