A pair of second period goals were the difference for the Soo Thunderbirds to get into the win column.

After dropping its season opener on Friday night in Hearst, the Thunderbirds skated to a 3-2 road victory over the Cochrane Crunch Saturday at the Tim Hortons Event Centre in Cochrane.

Alex Acosta’s goal with 3:50 to go in the second period held up as the game-winner for the Thunderbirds. Acosta finished the night with a goal and an assist.

Thunderbirds goaltender Eric Schuch made 42 saves, including 33 in the final 40 minutes.

Kelly Quevillon and Brendan Miller also scored for the Thunderbirds.

Austin Stauffer and Kyle Podwika completed the scoring for the Crunch.

Cochrane netminder Taylor Unruh made 22 saves.

The Thunderbirds road trip wraps up on Sunday afternoon in Timmins against the Rock.

The team opens home action on Sept. 15 at the John Rhodes Community Centre against the Blind River Beavers.
