Thunderbirds game postponed due to highway closure

A motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 forced the postponement of Friday’s Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League game between the Soo Thunderbirds and Timmins Rock at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

While en route to Sault Ste. Marie, the Rock bus was stopped on the highway after it was closed in both directions near Municipal Road 55 near Whitefish, Ont.

According to a release from the Ontario Provincial Police, a vehicle attempting to enter Highway 17 from Municipal Road 55 was struck by an eastbound 5-ton truck.

The game between the Thunderbirds and Rock has been rescheduled for Jan. 11 at the John Rhodes. Puck drop will be 7:30 p.m.
