Lucas Theriault spearheaded a key win for the Soo Thunderbirds in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action on Sunday night.

The high-scoring forward had a pair of power play goals and finished the night with five points as the Thunderbirds came from behind and beat the Rayside-Balfour Canadians 5-3 in Chelmsford.

Trailing 3-2, the Thunderbirds scored three times in the final eight minutes of regulation time to pick up the win.

The big night gives Theriault 53 points on the season, good enough for the league lead.

Noah Boman, with a goal and three assists for the Thunderbirds on Sunday, moved into second.

Matthew Bazarin chipped in with two goals and an assist for the Thunderbirds.

Goaltender Colin Ahern made 24 saves.

Ryan Mooney, Noah Serre, and Chase Stillman scored for the Canadians.

Goaltender David Bowen stopped 31 shots for Rayside. After the Thunderbirds scored into an empty net with 1:13 to go in regulation time, Sebastien Plamondon finished the game for the Canadians, stopping the only shot he faced.

The Thunderbirds will take a 26-8-0-1 record into a three-game road trip next weekend that begins on Friday night in Kirkland Lake against the Gold Miners.

The Canadians fall to 21-15-1-2 with the loss.
