A pair of goals in the second period helped the Soo Thunderbirds remain unbeaten in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action on Saturday night.

Nick Smith and Lucas Theriault scored 52 seconds apart late in the middle period to give the Thunderbirds a narrow 2-1 road win over the Soo (Mich.) Eagles.

Riley Jensen pulled the Eagles to within one in the opening minute of the third period but that would be as close as the Eagles would get.

Thunderbirds goaltender Colin Ahern made 26 saves.

Eagles goaltender Joseph Benedetto made 37 saves.

The Thunderbirds record improves to 7-0-0-0 while the Eagles fall to 4-5-0-0.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Oct. 6 at home against the Espanola Express. Puck drop at the John Rhodes Community Centre is set for 7 p.m.
