Thunderbirds blanked in exhibition matchup

After opening exhibition action with a win on Thursday on the road, the Soo Thunderbirds wrapped up the preseason on Friday night at home.

Joe Benedetto stopped all 33 shots he faces, including 17 in the third period as the Soo (Mich.) Eagles beat the Thunderbirds 4-0 at the John Rhodes Community Centre in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League exhibition action. The game was the back end of a home-and-home set between the two clubs.

Drew Wotta and Lucas Rothe had a goal and an assist each for the Eagles.

Mihali See and Brendan Blair also scored for the Eagles.

Thunderbirds goaltender Colin Ahern made 34 saves.

The Thunderbirds and Eagles open regular season action on Sept. 7. The Thunderbirds host the contest at the John Rhodes Community Centre in a 7 p.m. start.
