A three-game homestand came to an end for the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Soo Thunderbirds on Sunday night.

A pair of power play goals and a solid performance from goaltender Brandon Gordon lifted the Thunderbirds to a 2-0 win over the Elliot Lake Wildcats at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

Gordon made 25 saves for the Thunderbirds for the shutout.

Nick Smith paced the Thunderbirds offensively with a goal and an assist, giving him points in five straight games and 20 goals in 25 games this season.

Mark Tassone had the other goal for the Thunderbirds.

Elliot Lake goaltender Logan Sawka made 36 saves.

The win improves the Thunderbirds record to 16-7-2-0 and the team remains in second spot in the NOJHL’s West Division. The team sits one point behind the Blind River Beavers, who have five games in hand.

Elliot Lake falls to 12-17-1-0.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Nov. 23 on the road against the Rayside Balfour Canadians.
