Thunderbirds blank Express

The Soo Thunderbirds ended weekend action on Saturday night with a 4-0 win in Espanola over the Express

For the second time in a week, the Soo Thunderbirds faced the Espanola Express in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action.

After blanking the Express 7-0 at the Essar Centre on Monday night, the Thunderbirds went into Espanola on Saturday and the result wasn’t too different. This one came by way of a 4-0 victory at the Espanola Regional Recreation Complex.

Goaltender Doug Newhouse made 33 saves for the shutout.

Offensively, Kaiden McDonald had a goal and an assist for the Thunderbirds. Gage Stephney, Zach Senecal and Keenan Eddy also scored for the Thunderbirds.

Espanola goaltender Kyle Alaverdy made 35 saves for Espanola.

The win improves the Thunderbirds record to 13-5-0-0 while Espanola falls to 4-10-0-1.

In other action around the NOJHL on Saturday night, Landon Hubbard had a pair of goals to pace the Soo (Mich.) Eagles to a 5-3 win on home ice over the Elliot Lake Wildcats. Goaltender Kade Phipps made 32 saves for the Eagles. William Casey and Hayden Winch assisted on a pair of goals each for the home team. Justin Richer made 38 saves for the Wildcats. Mack Caruana had a goal and an assist for Elliot Lake.

In Sudbury, Dylan D’Agostino scored at 3:42 of overtime to give the Powassan Voodoos a 3-2 win over the Rayside Balfour Canadians. Nicholas Campbell made 30 saves for the Voodoos. Rayside goaltender Owen Johansson stopped 38 shots.

In Iroquois Falls, Shadow Reuben had two goals and two assists as the Iroquois Falls Eskis beat the Blind River Beavers 7-3. Dillan Bruce had two goals and an assist while David Osborne also had a pair of goals for the Eskis. Josh Dejulio assisted on three Iroquois Falls goals. Eskis goaltender Trevor Hawkes made 42 saves. Yianni Liarakos had a goal and an assist for the Beavers.

In Timmins, Wayne Mathieu’s goal 55 seconds into overtime gave the Timmins Rock a 3-2 win over the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners. Jared Hester and Jordan Rendle had two assists each for Timmins. Matthew Brassard had both goals for Kirkland Lake.
