The Soo Thunderbirds added some offensive depth to their lineup on Monday.

The team announced Monday afternoon that they have acquired forward Yan Kalashnikov from the Nipiwan Hawks of the Saskatchewan Junior League.

With the Hawks, Kalashnikov posted 10 points in 20 games. Last season, while with the British Columbia Hockey League's Alberni Valley Bulldogs, the 20-year-old forward had 35 points in 36 games.

"Yan is an elite forward," said Thunderbirds general manager Kevin Cain. "He's a very skilled skater and a proven scorer. We are thrilled that we were fortunate enough to land him."

The Minsk, Belarus native is expected to join the team later this week.

The team also announced on Monday that they have released forward Josh Borgen and defenceman Matt Thomas.
