Three-goal period sinks Thunderbirds

The Hearst Lumberjacks erased a 2-1 deficit with three goals in the second period to beat the Soo Thunderbirds on Saturday night

A three-goal second period was the difference as the Soo Thunderbirds dropped a 4-3 decision to the Hearst Lumberjacks on Saturday night at the John Rhodes Community Centre in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action.

Trailing 2-1, the Lumberjacks scored three times in just under five minutes in the late stages of the second period to take the lead for good.

Morgan Scriber had a goal and an assist for the Lumberjacks in the second period while Samuel Bourdages assisted on a pair of goals for Hearts in the contest.

Spencer Silver, Shadow Reuben and Wade Auger also scored for Hearst while goaltender Nicholas Dube made 23 saves.

Kaidan McDonald scored a pair of goals for the Thunderbirds. Tyler Malpass also scored for the home team.

Brandon Gordon got the start for the Thunderbirds, stopping 15 of 18 shots before being pulled late in the second period. Eric Schuch came in and stopped eight of nine shots the rest of the way.

The loss drops the Thunderbirds record to 13-5-1-0 while Hearst improves to 8-8-0-0.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Nov. 3 with a home game at the John Rhodes Community Centre against the Blind River Beavers. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
