Brad Jacobs’ bid to win the Canadian Open came to an end on Saturday night.
The Jacobs rink dropped a 5-2 decision to Peter de Cruz of Switzerland at the Grand Slam of Curling event going on this week in Camrose, Alta.
The semifinal loss was the lone loss for the Jacobs rink, which includes third Ryan Fry, second E.J. Harnden and lead Ryan Harnden, at the six-day tournament.
With the game tied at one, de Crux would take a 4-1 lead after scoring a pair in the third end before a steal of one in the fourth end en route to the win.
The Jacobs rink advanced to the semifinal thanks to a 7-3 win over Winnipeg’s Reid Carruthers in six ends earlier in the day Saturday.
Jacobs opened the game by scoring deuces in the first and third ends and held a 4-2 lead before a hit and roll in the fifth end sealed the win as the Jacobs rink would increase the lead to 7-2.
Jacobs had the day off on Friday after going 3-0 to open the triple-knockout event.
De Cruz advanced to the semifinal thanks to a 7-6 win over Edmonton’s Brendan Bottcher in the quarter-final.
Saturday’s other men’s semifinal saw Niklas Edin of Sweden beat Calgary’s Kevin Koe.
