The safety of the players is the main priority.

That was the basis for the decision to end Friday’s senior high school football game between the Superior Heights Steelhawks and White Pines Wolverines at halftime with the Steelhawks leading 34-0.

“I understand the decision,” said Steelhawks Coach Seth Cond. “There were some key injuries and didn’t feel they had the volume of kids to continue, which is fine. We’re all here for the kids and their safety, which is paramount.”

“We didn’t feel it would be safe for the players to go out for the second half,” said White Pines Coach Marco Bernabucci.

The Steelhawks scored three majors in the opening quarter en route to a 34-0 win in the shortened contest.

Elisha Ishimwe had touchdown runs of 12 and 24 yards. Mitchell DellaVedova also ran in for a pair of touchdowns from 20 and 37 yards out. Rob Wright had the other Steelhawks touchdown on a pass from Ethan Johnson in the opening quarter.

“We moved the ball well on offence,” Cond said. “It was an opportunity for us to distribute the ball around to come of our weapons. Defensively, we did what we do.”

Bernabucci did say that he is “seeing progress.”

“Our kids worked really hard,” Bernabucci said. “Our defence, it was a total 180 from last week (against Korah). They didn’t come out frozen, even though they dropped a couple of quick scores. We were making tackles and flowing to the football.”

The Steelhawks enter week three with a 2-0 record while the Wolverines sit at 0-2.

In Friday’s junior game, Superior Heights stopped a late drive to beat White Pines 21-15.

Superior Heights evens its record at 1-1 while White Pines falls to 0-2.

The high school football schedule resumes on Sept. 21 as White Pines faces St. Mary’s. Week three concludes the following day with a battle of unbeaten teams at the senior level as Superior Heights faces Korah. Junior action on both days begins at 4:45 p.m. with the senior game to follow at 7:30 p.m. All games are played at Superior Heights.
