Steelers to invade Sudbury

The Sault Steelers have the perfect opportunity to come home with a perfect record.

The Sault Steelers have the perfect opportunity to come home with a perfect record.

After opening the Northern Football Conference season on Saturday with a 21-10 road win in Belleville, the Steelers now travel to Sudbury for a match-up with the Spartans at 7 p.m. at Queen's Athletic Field.

Sudbury is a franchise that has been struggling on the field the past several years. This season hasn't gotten any better with a 0-2 start on the road. Sudbury handed Milton their first franchise win 19-7 in week one. This past weekend, Sudbury was blanked 21-0 in North Bay.

Steelers head coach Barry Rushon remains cautious heading into Sudbury. Rushon knows his team must be prepared and execute their game plan in order to be successful.

"We have to do our homework for this game. We have to make sure that we run the ball effectively and set-up the pass. We don't have any superstars out there but we got a quality group of offensive players and a quality group of defensive people," said Rushon.

"If our defense goes out there and does the job and our offense executes better than we did last week then there is no reason why we can't go in there and beat them."

The Steelers home opener is slated for June 21 at 7 p.m. at Rocky DiPietro Field against the expansion Tri-City Outlaws. Tri-City draws from the Kitchener, Waterloo and Guelph area.

*** NFC NOTES:

* In other week two games, Tri-City beat the Markham Raiders 27-6, the Mississauga Wolverines blanked the Milton Marauders 27-0 while the Oakville Longhorns, which have won every NFC championship since 1993, beat the Oshawa Hawkeyes 31-21.

* Oakville, Mississauga and North Bay are on top of the NFC standings at 2-0. Oshawa, Tri-City and Milton share a 1-1 record while the Steelers are next at 1-0. Mega City is winless in one outing while Sudbury, Markham and Belleville sit at 0-2.
