Steelers become NFC road warriors (UPDATED)

The Sault Steelers have kept their perfect record in tact with a 27-20 win over Mega City in Toronto on Saturday night.

The Sault Steelers have kept their perfect record in tact with a 27-20 win over Mega City in Toronto on Saturday night.

With the win, the Steelers improved to 6-0 in the Northern Football Conference, finish with a 4-0 regular season record on the road and remained tied with the Oakville Longhorns for first place.

Earlier this season, the Steelers edged Belleville and beat Sudbury and North Bay handily on the road.

In Mega City, the Steelers had to come from behind and pull out a last minute victory.

Keegan Franklin scored his second touchdown of the game with 31 seconds remaining in regulation time on a three-yard run to break a 20-20 tie and give the Steelers the 27-20 victory.

Franklin opened the scoring with a five-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Special teams problems for the Steelers allowed Mega City to jump to a 13-7 lead at half time as the Maddogs scored on a 112 yard missed field goal return and an 80 yard punt return in the final two minutes of the second quarter.

Mega City jumped to a 20-7 lead 40 seconds into the second half with a 65 yard pass and run touchdown before the Steelers regrouped and stormed back.

The Steelers recorded a safety before closing the lead to 20-12 on a 25-yard field goal by Anthony Posteraro, who also kicked two converts. Cody Boissoneau scored on a three yard run in the jumbo formation and Tony Boniferro hauled in the two-point convert attempt to tie the game 20-20.

The Steelers gained 203 yards rushing led by Toby Traveson's 91 yards on 13 carries and Kyle Lansdell's 50 yards on six carries. Quarterback Seth Cond was five of 15 passes with an interception while Lansdell led the receiving corps with three catches for 60 yards.

The Steelers also regained their discipline after a penalty filled game last weekend against North Bay. The Steelers were only flagged four times for 25 yards in Mega City after picking up 142 penalty yards a week earlier.

The Steelers, who boast the league's second best offense and third best defense based on points scored and allowed, finish the regular season with back to back home games. The Steelers entertain the 4-2 Oshawa Hawkeyes next Sunday and the Sudbury Spartans on July 26 at Rocky DiPietro Field.

The Oshawa game was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved to next Sunday because of a previous booking by the Bandettes at the field. Game time is 1p.m.
