Soo Night Hawks compete in Quad City Storm tournament

BIG RAPIDS, MICH. – The Soo Night Hawks competed in the Quad City Storm Summer Blast Baseball Tournament July 14 to July 16 in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Night Hawks played all of their games for the tournament at the former home of the Ferris State Bulldogs Baseball team – Win Kellum Stadium. The Night Hawks opened the tournament against the Royals and dropped a tough game 6-3 on Friday, July 14.

The Night Hawks would then play again on Saturday morning and unfortunately the short bench from illness and injuries caught up with the team in a loss against the Thumb Elite Athletics 1222.

On Saturday afternoon the Night Hawks took on the eventual tournament runner ups the Barnstorms and dropped an 8-0 decision. The Night Hawks would conclude the tournament on Sunday morning in the consolation game against the Latitude 44 Lakers with an 11-3 victory.

In the Friday opener the Night Hawks would fall behind early by a score of 4 to 0 after two innings and would have to fight the whole game to come back. Going into the last inning the Night Hawks would be trailing 6-2, but a late rally would result in one run and ending the game with the bases loaded to fall by the final score of 6 to 3.

Malcolm McPhee and Cole Wright would combine on a one hitter in the loss, while striking out a combined eight batters. Offensively, the Night Hawks got runs from Dylan Sewell, Noah Pearce, and Brett Deschene; driving in runs was Braedon Whalen. Picking up hits for the Night Hawks were Malcolm McPhee, Sewell, Whalen, Stephen Bos, Noah O’Brien, Pearce, and Deschene.

In the second game of the tournament the Night Hawks bats would fall silent with the lone hit being picked up by Brandon Boyer. Despite being tied at 2 after two innings, a shortage of arms from illness and injury would catch up to the Night Hawks in an eventual 12-2 defeat. The two runs were scored by Braedon Whalen and Brett Deschene.

On Saturday afternoon against the Barnstormers, the Night Hawks would once again come up short 8-0. The Night Hawks received a strong pitching performance from Cole Wright going a complete game while striking out two batters and allowing just six hits. The Night Hawks managed five hits from Brett Deschene, Malcolm McPhee, Dylan Sewell, and Braedon Whalen; but were not able to string them together to plate a run.

On Sunday morning, the Night Hawks would come out fired up and determined to end their losing streak. The Night Hawks put together their most complete game in some time, pounding out 15 hits to support a complete game on the mound by Dylan Sewell.

Sewell picked up four strike-outs while pitching a five-hitter and picking up the complete game win. Offensively, the 11 runs were scored by Malcolm McPhee, Brandon Boyer, Noah O’Brien, Dylan Sewell, Braedon Whalen, Brett Deschene, Cole Wright, and Jack McPhee. Every player in the lineup reached base at least once and those picking up hits were Malcolm McPhee, Sewell, Whalen, Boyer, O’Brien, Deschene, Noah Pearce, and Jack McPhee. Driving in runs were Whalen, Deschene, Malcolm McPhee, and Boyer.

Following the Quad City Tournament the Night Hawks season record now stands at 12-18-2.
