Skiers hit slopes for Mealey Classic

Racers from around the province will tackle the hills at the Searchmont Resort this weekend for the inaugural Mealey Classic.

The race replaces the event formerly known as the Wolfman Classic and was renamed as a tribute to the former coach of the Searchmont Ski Runners alpine racing team.

Competition begins on Thursday with two Super Giant Slalom races followed the Giant Slalom event on Friday and Saturday. The always exciting Dual Slalom will be an optional event held on Sunday. Racers took to the hill on Wednesday for Super G training.

The event is excepted to attract the top 11 to 14 year-old juvenile skiers from Ontario which the Ski Runners note will showcase the country's future stars of the sport.

Brian Mealey was involved in ski racing since 1967. Over a three-decade coaching span, Mealey promoted several skiers to higher levels of competition.

On hand for the event will be former Searchmont Ski Runner John Mealey, who is current the Chairman of Alpine Ontario Alpin and is a former member of the Canadian National Alpine Ski Team.

Also scheduled to attend is AOA executive director Mark Kristofic.
