SKI NOTES: Seven locals begin championship run

It is championship week in alpine skiing and seven members of the Searchmont Ski Runners will set their sights on gold.

It is championship week in alpine skiing and seven members of the Searchmont Ski Runners will set their sights on gold.

Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick, David Ghent-Kyle and Greg Moser are off to Banff, Alberta for the MARS Canadian Juvenile Alpine Championships while Matt Horbatuk, Meghan DiAngelo, Courtney Rains and Jillian Keast will head to the Mackenzie K1 Provincials in Chelsea, Quebec.

Fitzpatrick and Ghent-Kyle are making their second appearance at the national championships while Moser is making his first. The trio are competing in the 13 and 14 year-old Juvenile age group.

After hitting the slopes on Monday for the Super Giant Slalom training run, competition begins on Tuesday and Wednesday with Super G races at Lookout Mountain at Sunshine Resort. Giant Slalom races will be held on Friday and the Slalom on Saturday at Mount Norquay.

The younger K1 group from the Ski Runners will open at Camp Fortune on Monday with the Slalom followed by the Giant Slalom on Tuesday and Dual Slalom on Wednesday.

Ghent-Kyle, Moser and Keast are all Sudbury natives who train and compete with the Ski Runners.

*** BRONZE FOR ACTON:

Sault product Brigitte Acton won a bronze medal in the downhill event at the Pontiac GMC Canadian Ski Championships in Le Massif, Quebec on Friday.

Acton finished 1.62 seconds behind winner Emily Brydon of Fernie, B.C. Kelly VanderBeek of Kitchener claimed the silver medal.

Acton finished fifth in the FIS downhill on Thursday. The Super G race scheduled for Sunday was canceled due to poor weather.

Amy Lattimer, also from the Sault, finished 22nd on Friday.

*** KATES TAKES A BRONZE:

Sault Ste. Marie's Adam Kates captured a bronze medal in the 50-kilometre open men's category on Sunday at the Canadian Cross-Country Ski Championships in Charlo, New Brunswick.
