Shoust, Westman place second in adventure race

Sault natives John Shoust and Trisha Westman are among the top adventure racers in Canada and their success continued with a second place finish at the Appalachian Extreme Adventure Race in Maine.

Shoust and Westman, members of Team Supplier Pipeline, came in second after crossing the finish line on Monday. The team completed the race in 58 hours and 39 minutes, more than three hours behind the leader and three hours ahead of the third place finishers.

The 200-mile race began in New Hampshire with a 45-mile paddle down the Connecticut River followed by a 30-mile cross-country bike. Teams then have a 29-mile trek, a 39-mile bike, a rappel trek, 26-mile paddle and then a five-mile bike to the finish line in Maine.

Other members of Team Supplier Pipeline include team captain Dave Corner and Bob Miller.

Teams competing at the AEAR had the opportunity to qualify for the World Championship Adventure Race, win cash and prizes.

Westman, regarded as one of the best female racers in Canada, is a four-year veteran of the sports and won the AEAR event last year. Westman also finished second last year at the Raid the North Series Championship.

Shoust is in his third year racing as has an impressive resume of a first place finish, two seconds, a third and a fifth place finish in five previous races.
