Sault Surge swimmer commits to U.S. school

The Sault Surge Aquatic Team announced on Monday afternoon that area swimmer Ali Robertson has committed to Southern Illinois University.

In announcing her commitment, Robertson said she plans to study criminal justice at the Carbondale, Ill.-based school.

In addition to being a member of the Surge, Robertson is also a member of the Sault Area High School swim team in the Michigan Sault.

Prior to the closure of the Canada-United States border due to COVID-19, Robertson regularly trained with both teams.

Following is a full release from the Surge on Robertson's commitment:

Until the bridge closed a year ago, Ali Robertson would faithfully cross it twice a day to train with Sault Surge Aquatic Team. During the Sault Area High School swim season, she would train regularly with both teams, balancing a taxing training load. Robertson has made Sault Surge and the Blue Devils very proud and will undoubtedly continue to do so with the Division I Salukis come September. Though COVID-19 prevented her from visiting the school in person prior to signing with them, multiple conversations with the SIU coaches convinced her their program and school would be a great fit.

Among Robertson’s achievements are:

• Three-time winner of the UP Swimmer of the Year
• UP record holder in 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly, and 200 IM
• Canadian National Championships and Olympic Trials
