Sault College hockey teams combine for three weekend wins, Algoma basketball hits the road

Sault College's basketball and hockey teams had busy weekends, while Algoma University’s basketball teams were on the road for weekend games.

The Sault College men’s hockey team picked up a pair of wins over the weekend in American Collegiate Hockey Association action locally against Davenport University.

On Saturday, goals by Anthony Pullicino and Ryan Vendramin in the third period were the difference as Sault College beat Davenport 5-3.

Vendramin finished the night with two goals and two assists. Austin Rowe and Kaelan O’Flynn also had two assists each.

Steven Khull and Bryceton Lalonde also scored for Sault College.

Jeff Rahilly, Clint Loney, and Kyle Mazur scored for Davenport. Spencer Sandberg assisted on a pair of goals.

On Sunday afternoon, Sault College capped off the weekend with a convincing 10-2 win.

Lalonde had three goals and an assist while Vendramin had two goals and three assists.

O’Flynn also had four points, assisting on four Sault College goals.

Rowe chipped in with two goals and an assist. Mark Tassone had a goal and an assist.

The team now prepares for a pair of road games against Liberty University, beginning on Nov. 8.

The Sault College women’s hockey team was also in action against Davenport over the weekend.

Sault College dropped the opener by a 5-4 score.

Mispon Martin had a pair of goals for Sault College while Olivia Barsanti and Ashleigh Wiwchar also scored.

Sault College rebounded for a 3-2 overtime win in the second game.

Martin had a pair of goals in the victory, including the overtime winner while Barsanti also scored, giving her a pair of goals in the weekend set.

With a weekend off in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association action, the Sault College basketball teams faced Lake Superior State’s JV teams on Sunday.

In the women’s game, Sault College outscored LSSU 15-2 in the third quarter en route to a 56-32 win.

Emma Filion led Sault College with 19 points. Clara Yanchuk chipped in with 11 points.

Sheresa Brown and Elizabeth Bell had 10 points each for Lake State.

In the men’s game, Sault College got 35 points from Simon Wal and held off a late charge to beat Lake State 84-83.

Jaylyne Moore-Tucker had 18 points for Sault College.

Stone Arnold had 22 points for Lake State while Tristen Myers chipped in with 17.

The Sault College basketball teams return to OCAA action on Nov.9 against Conestoga. Tip-off for the women’s game is 6 p.m. and the men’s game begins at 8 p.m.

Both Algoma basketball teams hosted Ontario University Athletics games over the weekend against Western.

On Friday night, the Algoma women dropped a 67-43 decision.

Western, leading by eight through three quarters, pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Maddy Horst led Western with 17 points while Dionne Martin had eight points to lead Algoma.

On Saturday, with Algoma leading by 3 at the half, Western outscored Algoma 21-7 in the third quarter in a 70-59 win.

Horst and Rachel Fradgley had 13 points each for Western.

Thais Matte led Sault College with 18 points.

In Friday’s men’s game, Omar Shiddo had 23 points as Western beat Algoma 90-59.

Aryan Sharma had 15 points and Jerric Palma had 14 points for Western.

Souber Musse had 19 points to lead Algoma.

In Saturday’s men’s game, Sharma had 32 points as Western capped the weekend with a 116-67.

Nicholas Gehlen led Algoma with 13 points.

The Algoma teams return to action on Nov. 8 on the road against McMaster.
