Sault College hockey team opens season at home, Algoma soccer hits the road

After a tight win on opening day, the Sault College hockey team won in convincing fashion on Sunday

It was a busy weekend for Sault College athletics with soccer action as well as the season opener for the men’s hockey team.

On the heels of winning a national title last season, the Sault College men’s hockey team returned to action opening American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) action against Miami (Ohio).

On Saturday, Sault College got two goals and an assist from Ryan Vendramin in a 5-2 win.

Max Khull also had three points for Sault College with a goal and two assists. Mark Tassone and Noah Serre chipped in with a goal and two assists each.

Austin Rowe and Kaidan McDonald assisted on a pair of goals each for Sault College while Justin Richer picked up the win in goal.

Jack Lipovich had a goal and an assist for Miami. Jacob Schmitt also scored.

On Sunday afternoon, a four-goal second period broke a 1-1 tie as Sault College ended the weekend with a 10-1 win over Miami (Ohio).

Vendramin had five goals for Sault College in the win while Khull assisted on six goals.

Bryceton Lalonde added a pair of goals while Lucas Duckstein, Daniel Heelis and Parker Morgan had a goal and an assist each for Sault College. Rowe and Tanner Mayne assisted on three goals each.

Torsten Lee had the lone goal in Sunday’s contest for Miami (Ohio).

The team returns to action on Sept. 27 on the road against Trine University.

In Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) soccer action, Sault College hosted games against Durham at Superior Heights on Saturday.

In the women’s game, Vanessa Juras scored three times as Durham beat Sault College 7-0.

Makayla Rudder, Morgan Blaind, and Jessica Ferreira also scored for Durham.

In the men’s game, Nicholas Payne, Joshua Lee, LeRohne Young, and Marcellus Paul had two goals each as Durham beat Sault College 10-0.

Both teams return to action on Sept. 28 on the road against Seneca.

In Ontario University Athletics (OUA) soccer action on Saturday, Algoma University dropped games in both women’s and men’s games at the University of Guelph.

In the women’s game, Victoria Hinchcliffe scored three times as Guelph beat Algoma 9-1. Vanessa Mazur had two goals each for Guelph.

Helen Lyden had the lone goal for Algoma.

In the men’s game, Guelph scored four times in the opening half en route to a 6-0 win.

Evan Dick and Alex Zis had two goals each for Guelph.

Both Algoma teams return to action on Sept. 28 at home against Brock. Kickoff time at Superior Heights is 1 p.m. for the women and 3 p.m. for the men.
